Course Information

Introduction

Study for DELTA in London
Gaining a Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults (DELTA) qualification requires significant time and effort.
Make the most of this investment by studying with us at our Partner centre in London.
DELTA at Our Partner centre in London combines seminars and lectures with teaching practice.
This will improve your understanding of the English language, as well as demonstrate the principles of effective second language English teaching.
The input sessions will be taught Face to Face but there will also be some sessions taught online on Microsoft Teams.
There are three modules.
• Module One looks at the background to teaching and learning and is assessed with a written exam.
• Module Two explores professional practice and is assessed with a portfolio of teaching assignments.
• Module Three is a specialist extended assignment.
The 23-week integrated course which is designed for candidates who want to take all three modules runs from Tuesday 2 January 2024 to Sunday 9 June 2024 (including the final assessment week).
The course is also designed to allow candidates to take the Modules on a separate basis.

Assessment: Our DELTA Course Consists of 3 Integrated Modules
Module 1
Module 1 comprises two written examinations of 1.5 hours each, to be held on Wednesday 05 June 2024.
• Paper 1 tests candidates’ knowledge of ELT terminology; writing and/or speaking sub-skills; and language systems (grammar, lexis, phonology, and discourse).
• Paper 2 tests candidates’ knowledge of ELT testing; the aims, purposes, and principles behind published teaching materials; and the principles and beliefs behind ELT methodology.
Module 2
This involves input sessions, lesson plans, observation and post-lesson evaluation based on topics agreed on by the tutors. A total of five practical teaching assignments will take place during the course.
Module 2 consists of coursework. During the course participants must:
• Research and complete a Professional Development Assignment which consists of the following:
o One lesson which is observed by a DELTA tutor. This is diagnostic in its aim and is therefore unassessed. This takes place between 8 and 12 January.
o Three written pieces (comprising of a total of 2500 words), in which the course participant reflects on current practice and sets goals for development.
o One written assignment focussing on a new area of practice (1500-2000 words + lesson plan), which consists of reading and research, a lesson observed by a colleague and a self-evaluation.
o Ten hours of observation of experienced teachers. This can be of live teaching, streamlined observations, recorded lessons or of online teaching.
o Research and teach three internally assessed teaching assignments each of which includes a written background assignment of 2000-2500 words. These take place in the weeks of 30 January-2 February, 19-23 February 11-15 March 2024.
o Research and teach one externally assessed teaching assignment, which contains a background assignment of 2000-2500 words. This takes place in the week of 1-5 April 2024.
Module 3
Module 3 is assessed through an extended written assignment of 4000-4500 words and focuses on the design and assessment of a specialist group of learners, Course participants can choose to research a specialism from the following list:
• Business English (BE)
• Teaching young learners/young adults (specified age group required with 5-year range e.g. 8-13, 14-19) (YL)
• English for Special Purposes (ESP)
• English for Academic Purposes (EAP)
• Teaching examination classes (EX)

• ESOL learners with literacy needs (ESOL)
• CLIL/Embedded ESOL (teaching English through subject/work-based learning) (CLIL)

If applicants have identified another area of specialism, they should contact Us for confirmation that supervision of the chosen area will be possible. The deadline for submission of Module 3 is Sunday 9 June 2024.
